Is Your Roof Ready for the Elements of Winter?

Image
Peace of mind is priceless. Especially going into the Christmas Season you want to have as little extra stress as possible!  Set aside a few minutes to examine your roof to avoid unwanted surprises when after the first round of round of winter precipitation falls. Here are some guidelines to help make sure your roof is ready for the elements ahead.   Examine the framing for any sags or uneven areas.  This could be the sign of damage to the foundation under the shingles. Clean the gutters if you haven't already.  Also make sure they are tightly fastened for proper flow.  Water standing on your roof with no way of escape is a disaster waiting to happen! If you have any natural dips or valley in your roof make sure the area(s) are free of debris.  The additional weight combined with ice or snow could be too heavy for the roof to maintain. Look over the flashing to ensure it is all tightly fastened and no tears or gaps have occurred. Scan the shingles to make sure they are a

The Time to Winterize is Here!

Image
Dropping temps, turning leaves and shorter days means it is time to winterize your home.  This "honey-do" is never at the top of the list but it is a necessary maintenance.  By doing a few simple things you can save a ton of money through the winter months. Block the leaks!   Find the leaks on a breezy day by walking around inside holding a lit incense stick to the most common drafty areas.  Be sure to check recessed lighting, window and door frames and electrical outlets. Fill the leaks with caulk or whatever treatment is appropriate. Clean the Gutters! Once the leaves fall, be sure to get all of the debris out of your gutters.  Clogged drains can cause an ice dam to form causing all sorts of problems.  If you see what looks like damage while cleaning you can request an inspection of your gutters and roof from a Lake of the Ozarks Roofer . Insulate to keep heat in.  At least 12 inches of insulation is recommended in your attic for maximum benefit.  You will not only f

Make Your House Spooktacular this Halloween

Image
The way we feel about Halloween around here is - Go Big or Go Home!  Think BIG when planning your outdoor Halloween scheme.  Use large items that are mounted on your roof or hanging from it to make a huge impact.  Many are very affordable!! Nothing is creepier than looking up and seeing a ghoulish figure looking back at you!  Or a creature that makes you think you are in a cave from Lord of the Rings!   Here are some things to think about when making your plan. Use common sense when mounting and attaching items so they don't cause damage. Consider the best way to attach things so the decoration is stable. Especially if attaching to the gutters make sure the piece isn't too heavy. Consider complimenting with white or colored lighting that can add some great effects! Be sure not to block any drainage or exhaust areas. Compliment what is up high with lawn decorations too.  Create a theme from the top down! Use music to play eerie music that will automatically put visi

Easy Preventive Maintenance for Your Home This Fall

Image
Limited daylight and cooler temps act as a gentle reminder that fall is here and winter is not far behind.  That means time to knock off those honey do's - especially those of an outdoor nature. With simple preventative maintenance you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the long run.  Here are some things to check off the list while weather still permits!! Clean your gutters and downspouts .  Make sure the canals and spouts are debris free. If you have a lot of trees surrounding your home, consider gutter guards. Inspect windows and doors to insure the seal is tight and not letting air through.  If air is seeping in either caulk the area to seal it or replace the molding if budget allows.  At minimum consider lining with plastic before the temp drops to low! Hire a Lake of the Ozarks Roofer for a  free inspection .  If shingles are curling or cracking, they need to be replaced.  Depending on how many repairs are needed will determine if a patch will do o

From Your House to Your Dog's House

Image
Everyone knows that dog owners will do just about anything for their adopted kiddos.  Making an outdoor home for the pooch with all the comforts of their indoor home is very important.   There are several things to consider when choosing and placing your pet's humble abode.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind: The size of the dog will ultimately determine the interior size needed for comfort of the animal.  Make sure there is plenty of room for him to turn around and stretch out comfortably inside the structure.   The entrance needs to be appropriate for the dogs height and jumping capabilities as well. Elevate the dog house so it is not sitting directly on the ground to avoid water from coating the floor of the house.  Also having a slanted roof that is properly built will help to keep out the elements.   The material used in the roof is important to consider as well to help with naturally heating and cooling.   Consider insulation, depending on your climate, which

7 Tips For Keeping Your Gutters Debris Free

Image
Preventive Maintenance Is Key! Any homeowner can tell you that keeping the honey do's checked off is very important and can save you costly repairs in the long run.   One of the easiest chores to overlook is cleaning the gutters.   Good maintenance is what it takes to keep a waterfall from flowing from your home.  Here are some easy tips to make cleaning the gutters easier: Wear gloves if you are digging out debris by hand to avoid cuts and scrapes. Clean in both the spring and the fall so the build up doesn't solidify as much, making it harder to remove. Using a metal scoop will make it easier to remove items wedged tightly in the small space. Have a good ladder of the correct height for your roof so you are above the gutter, providing a more stable base.  A free standing ladder is best but if you must use an extension ladder make sure it is leaning against something stable and not the gutter which will bend under pressure. Get a power washer with a tel
