What To Do With A Roof Leak Until The Roofer Arrives

Rainy days are best enjoyed snuggled up on your couch watching movies. You keep hearing the sound of water dripping coming from the dining room though... Odd. Upon investigation, you find a leak in your ceiling. What are you going to do? First, you're going to calmly and quietly contact the best roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks to schedule a roof repair. Next, you're going to take action to get the immediate situation under control by following these simple steps:

Minimize the Damage

A sprung leak in your roof can cause major damage to your home if not addressed quickly and correctly. One of the most important steps you can take is to stop the damage from spreading. Find the wettest spot and place a bucket and plastic in that area to catch the majority of the water. If you notice that your ceiling is bubbling where the water is leaking from, that's a pretty good indication that there is standing water which means great potential for some serious damage. Poke a small hole in the bubble to release the water and to prevent the standing water from spreading further and causing more damage.

Avoid Extended Damage

Leaking water can cause further damage to more than just your roof and ceiling. Water tends to find paths of travel, so even though you've found a major leak in the center of the room, the source of the leak could be coming from somewhere else. Check the surrounding floor and wall area for moisture. Make sure the carpet and flooring is dry to avoid mold or staining. If your carpet is saturated, it may be necessary to pull back the carpet to allow the padding to dry out thoroughly. Use fans to dry it out faster.

Locate the Leak Source

Once you've addressed the immediate concerns and minimized any potential damage, you'll want to try to pinpoint the source of the leak. Don't just assume that where it's leaking in your ceiling is where the roof leak is. As stated before, water finds travel paths. In an attic this could mean that there are several feet between the source of the leak in the roof and the leak in the ceiling. The best way to find the source is to get in the attic and start investigating.

Once you've located the source, you'll want to temporarily fix your problem until something more permanent can be done. Some great quick fix ideas are duct tape, a patch, sealant, a tarp, and/or buckets. Clean the area surrounding the point of entry before trying to patch the hole to avoid it from failing before your Lake of the Ozarks roofer arrives. Clean up and dry any wet areas you find in the attic to avoid a mold issue. We would recommend not climbing on your roof to find the source of the problem that way; instead, leave the heights to a licensed professional.

Now that you've called a roofer and gotten the immediate issue addressed on the inside of your home you can get back to watching your movie. Put some popcorn on. Grab your favorite beverage. Enjoy the sound of the rain on your roof. Leave the rest to the roofing experts at the Lake of the Ozarks. With over 100 years of combined experience in the roofing industry, you can be sure we'll provide high quality work, professional and personal service, and competitive pricing. Don't go anywhere else for your Lake of the Ozarks roofing needs.

4 Factors Affecting the Lifespan of Your Asphalt Roof

When an asphalt shingle has a 30-year warranty, that means under ideal conditions it can last 30 years. Homeowners are often surprised to find their roof showing signs of deterioration prior to the end of that warranty. In today's blog, Above & Beyond Roofing discusses several factors that can affect the lifespan of your asphalt roof.

1. Installation

Even the best roofing materials can't do their job if they're not installed properly. Improper installation can significantly decrease the lifespan of your asphalt roof. A new roof is an expensive investment that you want to last as long as possible. That's why it's so important to hire a well-established, reputable roofer at the Lake of the Ozarks. Do some research and check references before hiring someone to install your roof.

2. Weather

Depending on the climate you live in, the lifespan of an asphalt roof will differ. Here in Missouri, we experience a variety of different weather events. From rain and snow to hail and tornadoes, you never know what to expect. While asphalt shingles are built to withstand weather, taking proper care of your roof prior to and following severe weather events is key in increasing the length your roof will last. Rapid freeze and thaw cycles can result in granule loss and a decrease in the lifespan of your roof. Over exposure to sunlight can also cause your shingles to deteriorate more quickly. Luckily, this isn't typically an issue in Missouri.

3. Proper Maintenance

The best way to ensure your roof lasts as long as it should is by performing proper maintenance. Simply put, take care of your roof and it will take care of you and your home. One of the easiest and most important steps in proper roof maintenance is to schedule a free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks at least twice a year. In addition to taking care of minor repairs before they turn into bigger problems, there are other things you can do to increase the life of your roof, including cleaning your gutters and trimming back overhanging trees.

4. Ventilation

Proper roof ventilation is not only important for energy efficiency of your home, but is also key to increasing the lifespan of your roof. Air needs to flow freely through your attic in order to keep your roof from overheating and to keep moisture out of your home. During the summers, an improperly ventilated attic creates a hot roof deck that can damage shingles. During the winter, improper ventilation can contribute to the formation of ice dams. If you have a new roof installed by a professional, they'll be able to let you know if your attic and roof are properly ventilated.

Above & Beyond Roofing Earns Esteemed 2016 Angie’s List Super Service Award

This award reflects Above & Beyond Roofing's consistently high level of customer service.

Our Lake of the Ozarks roofing company is proud to announce that we have earned the home service industry's coveted Angie's List Super Service Award, reflecting an exemplary year of customer service to members of the local services marketplace and consumer review site in 2016.

This achievement is particularly significant, as Angie's List experienced unprecedented member growth in 2016. More than 1.6 million consumers, many of whom were eager to quickly hire qualified service pros, joined Angie's List after the company added a new, free membership tier.

"Companies that can meet higher demands without missing a beat in their exemplary performance standards truly do stand apart from their peers," said Angie's List Founder Angie Hicks. "Only a fraction of the roofing companies in the Lake of the Ozarks area were able to do it."

Angie's List Superior Service Award 2016 winners have met strict eligibility requirements, which include an "A" rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade. The SSA winners must also be in good standing with Angie's List, pass a background check and abide by Angie's List operational guidelines.

Service company ratings are updated on Angie's List as new, verified consumer reviews are submitted.  Companies are graded on an A through F scale in areas ranging from price to professionalism to punctuality.

"The biggest change at Angie's List is that we are connecting even more consumers to high quality service professionals," Hicks said. "And that's good for everyone."

Benefits of Using Matterhorn Metal Roofing Products

At Above & Beyond Roofing, we offer a variety of different roofing products to fit your needs. In today's blog, we'll explore the benefits of the Matterhorn Metal Roofing products. Matterhorn Metal Roofing offers lightweight, Energy Star rated roofing products in hyper realistic Shake, Slate and Tile designs. Keep reading to learn more.

Matterhorn Shake - MatterhornMetalRoofing.com
Matterhorn Roofing Products

Matterhorn Metal Roofing products come in three different styles: shake, slate and tile. These products are stronger than steel and come in a variety of different colors to fit your style and needs.

Shake
The shake panels include eight separate elevation changes to replicate the irregularity of real wood shakes. Chiseling and cracks are also used to mimic the look of real wood. The specialized chiseled trough is at maximum height to allow constant water movement away from the roof deck. The shake product line captures the four different stages in the life cycle of a cedar roof. From a rich and darkly stained color to an iconic weathered silver-grey, homeowners can choose a color variation that works with their home's exterior.

Slate
The slate panels include eight separate elevation changes to replicate the irregularity of real slate. Chiseling and cracks are also used to mimic the look of real slate. The specialized chiseled trough is at maximum height to allow constant water movement away from the roof deck. The slate product line is available in 5 different colors: brownstone, castle gray, cobalt, mountain sage and storm slate.

Matterhorn Tile - MatterhornMetalRoofing.com
Tile
The tile panels offer Matterhorn's 5/8" reveal, which provides the character and depth that your home deserves. They are also lightweight when compared many other shingle brands. The tiles attach with a tongue and groove fit, which is then concealed. There are eight different colors that make up the Matterhorn tile line. Traditional and contemporary colors come together for a hue that will compliment any style home. Choose from brick blend, jade, terracotta, Tuscan stone, weathered canyon, weathered sage, weathered clay or weathered sequoia.

Energy Efficiency

The Matterhorn Metal Roofing shingles are able to reflect up to 66% of incoming solar radiation. Every Matterhorn roof is coated with a PVDF Tri-Pigment Reflective Paint System, which helps reflect solar heat on a roof. They have the ability to re-emit up to 89% of absorbed heat. By keeping the roofing surface cool and preventing excess heat from escaping into the home, your roof is reducing energy expenditures on air conditioning. In addition, the lowered demand on electricity improves the electricity grid and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, so these roofing products are good for the planet.

Product Performance

Every Matterhorn Metal Roof has been independently laboratory tested to withstand winds up to 130 MPH, which is equivalent to an F2 tornado. While the competition tile roofs can break from the freeze/thaw cycles and from the sheer weight of snow, Matterhorn products are purposefully designed to withstand the harshest winter climates. Over time, regular tile roofs become brittle and easily susceptible to hail damage. They can easily break during severe hail storms, and the hail rating on asphalt shingles varies between manufacturers. Even severe, wind-riven hail is no match for a Matterhorn Metal Roof. As for fire, all Matterhorn panels hold the highest fire rating available. Regular tile roofs can warp during a fire or collapse from eight, and the fire rating on asphalt roofs also varies greatly depending on the manufacturer. When it comes to product performance, Matterhorn clearly offers a lot of benefits.
