5 Metal Roof Myths Uncovered

When it comes to choosing the type of roof for your house, you have so many options to choose from.  If you read our blog from two weeks ago, you've already heard about the many advantages metal roofs provide. However, you may have also heard some things about metal roofs that make you second guess the choice. As your Lake of the Ozarks roofer, we have decided to focus on 5 common myths about metal roofs this week.  MetalRoofing.com has some great information about these myths!

Lightning

Contrary to popular belief, a metal roof will not increase the likelihood of lightning striking your home. However, if your home were struck by lightning, the metal roof would disperse the energy safely throughout the structure.  Since metal roofing isn't combustible or flammable, its a low risk and desirable option, especially where severe weather such as lightning is concerned.

Rust

Steel metal roofing has a "metallic coating" made of either zinc or a combination of zinc and aluminum making them built to last!  The metallic coating is bonded to the steel at the factory to prevent rust from forming. Then paint is applied over the metallic coating to provide the long-lasting color you desire for your roof at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Durability

Many people think that you can't walk on a metal roof without damaging it. This is incorrect; you can safely walk on any metal roof.   However, we recommend you talk to your installer or roof manufacturer before walking on it.  They will be able to provide details on how to walk on the particular roof that you have based on the style and pitch of the roof.

Noise

A common misconception is that a metal roof is noisier than other types of roofing.  The truth though, is that when installed with metal sheathing, a metal roof on your home will actually silence the noise from bad weather such as rain and hail.  Sometimes it will work even better to reduce the noise than other roofing materials.

Dents

In most cases, a metal roof can withstand decades of extreme weather such as hail and heavy snow. The systems build today even have a 150-mph wind rating which is equal to an F2 tornado!  This means your metal roof is also safe from the wind gusts that can accompany hail storms.

If you have any other questions about whether or not a metal roof is right for you, give Above & Beyond Roofing a call at 573-302-0354.  We can provide you with a free quote on your new roof at the Lake of the Ozarks! ANSWERS:

1. B - Lots of towns had their own commemorations before 1868, but it is said that Memorial Day became a holiday in that year when Gen. John A. Logan of Grand Army of the Republic issued a proclamation that said "The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit."  After World War I, Memorial Day commemorations honored not just the Civil War dead but soldiers who had died in all American conflicts.

2. D - The answer depends on whom you ask. All three towns — and a few others, including Richmond and Columbus, Ga. — lay some claim to originating the tradition. Historians haven’t settled on a definitive answer, though in 1966 Congress declared Waterloo the “birthplace” of Memorial Day.

3. C - Decoration Day

4. A - In addition to Memorial Day, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas observe some form of remembrance for Confederate soldiers killed in the Civil War. In several states, it’s the fourth Monday in April, to commemorate the official surrender of the Confederate Army to the Union side on April 26, 1865.

5. C - In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Act, which moved several traditional holidays, including Memorial Day, from a fixed date on the calendar to a designated Monday so as to create long weekends. The bill went into effect three years later. While adding convenience, some groups think the shift had unintended effects — the Veterans of Foreign Wars, for example, said in 2002 that “changing the date to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day.”

6. B - The Doylestown parade dates to 1866, a year before Ironton’s. Ironton claims to have the oldest “continuously held” Memorial Day parade, while Portsmouth boasts it has the oldest “annually held” Memorial Day parade. Douglaston lays claim to America’s “largest” event.

7. C - It is customary for the president or vice president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington, not at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

8. D - The soldiers put flags in front of more than 260,000 gravestones and about 7,300 niches at Arlington. (Another 13,500 flags are placed at the Soldier’s and Airmen’s Cemetery.)

9. C - In 1877 Lee’s son did sue the government for confiscating Arlington illegally, but he actually won his suit. The Supreme Court gave him back the land, but what could the Lee family do with an estate littered with corpses? George Lee sold it back to the government for $150,000. Over time, 250,000 soldiers would be buried in what is now Arlington National Cemetery.

10. D - According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume 7 billion hot dogs during the summer season — or about 818 hot dogs per second, from late May to early September.

11. A - The first “Indianapolis Sweepstakes” race took place on Memorial Day 1911, and the race has coincided with the holiday ever since. Over the years “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” as it’s billed, was often advertised as the “annual Memorial Day race” or something similar.

12. B - The third installment of the film franchise took in more than $139 million at the box office over Memorial Day weekend in 2007. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes in second with over $126 million, followed by X-Men: The Last Stand and Fast & Furious 6.

Consider a Metal Roof for Your Lake of the Ozarks Home

At Above & Beyond Roofing our work focuses heavily on commercial and residential in and around the Lake area – there is literally no job too big or too small. We guarantee high quality work along with professional and personal service.  We can do everything from repairs to new construction, shingles to tile roofs at the Lake of the Ozarks.  So today we want to talk to you about metal roofs and why you might want to consider this option for your home or business.  MetalRoofing.com has a lot of great examples of why you should choose metal over other roofing materials.

Valuable Investment

Although the initial cost of a premium metal roof is higher than most other roofing materials, you'll end up saving money in the long run.  Materials such as asphalt require re-roofing every 10 to 20 years, whereas a metal roof can last a lifetime!  A metal roof can also increase the resale value of your home and in some places can even reduce your homeowner's insurance.

Energy Efficient

Whether you choose a light or a dark color, metal roofing reflects heat effectively to reduce cooling costs in the summer and to help insulate homes in the winter.  This can definitely help to lower your energy bills.

Long Lasting

Non-metal roofs typically last an average of 17 years. Asphalt can require re-roofing every 10 to 20 years, whereas a metal roof has lasting durability of 2 to 3 times longer!  Chances are that a metal roof at the Lake of the Ozarks will be the last roof you ever install on your home.

Long Warranties

Most metal roofing comes with a 30 to 50 year manufacturer warranty, plus a workmanship warranty from the installer.  Talk to your local roofing contractor at the Lake of the Ozarks, Above & Beyond Roofing for warranties available in this area.

Variety of Styles

No matter what roofing style, color or finish you currently have, there is a metal roofing style to match it! Metal roofing looks just like other common roofing materials such as asphalt shingle, clay tile, cedar shake or slate. The difference is that metal lasts 2 to 3 times longer!

Please feel free to give us a call at 573-302-0354 with any questions that you may have regarding metal roofs. Above & Beyond Roofing has been in business for over 13 years and the staff has more than 100 years' combined experience!  So you know that you can't go wrong choosing Above & Beyond Roofing for all your roofing needs here at the Lake of the Ozarks!

10 Easy Ways to Show Your Appreciation on Mother's Day

Mother's Day is just a few days away!  A day to celebrate mother's everywhere and show them how much you care about them.  As many of you may know, Above and Beyond Roofing owner Melissa Krokson is a mother to a beautiful little girl Devin, as well as 4 dogs!  In celebration of Mother's Day, we would like to share some easy ways to show your mother your appreciation this weekend!

1. Make her a homemade card.

Mom's don't care about how much money you spend on them for Mother's Day.  You can show how much you care by taking some time out of your busy schedule to make her something homemade such as a card.

2. Bake her some cookies.

Mom's love sweets, but typically don't have time to make them for themselves.  If they do get a chance to make them, the kids usually gobble them down in minutes.  Make her something delicious that is just for her to enjoy!

3. Spend the day with her.

Many of you reading this have probably already left home and moved on to living on your own. Some of you may live miles away from your mom.  If this is the case, just spending some time with her, catching up is one of the best Mother's Day gifts you can give her.

4. Make her a list of all things you appreciate her doing for you.

Going about our day to day lives, we rarely think of all the wonderful things our mother's have done for us. Make her a list of all the things she has done for you over the years that you appreciate. Maybe its just being there to listen to you when you've had a rough day, maybe its cooking you dinner or tucking you into bed. Whatever it may be, make a list and include even the little things that maybe she doesn't even realize had an impact on you.

5. Bring her breakfast in bed.

Rather than her getting up to make everyone breakfast like she usually does, get up before her and bring her breakfast in bed.  This will be the perfect way to start off her Mother's Day celebration. Be sure to make her favorite food and don't forget the coffee, tea or whatever her favorite morning beverage is.

6. Do something that she enjoys.

Does your mom love shopping, but never gets to go?  Maybe she wishes she could relax at the spa or enjoy a day at the park.  Take her to do something she enjoys that she doesn't get to do on a regular basis.

7. Have a Movie Night with her.

Whether its taking her out to the theater or renting one of her favorite movies, she will love spending time with you and enjoying a movie.  Be sure to include popcorn, her favorite candy and something to wash it down with.

8. Give her a Spa Day.

Even if you can't afford to take her to a spa, you can still pamper her.  Buy some body scrub, bath salts and lotion at the store.  Let her relax in the bathtub for a while and after treat her to a foot massage.

9. Give her pictures of you.

Mom's always love to have pictures of their kids whether its to show off to company or for comfort when the kids are away.  Gather pictures or get some taken of you, your brothers or sisters and the rest of the family.  Create a photo album or scrapbook for her with all the pictures you've found.

10. Make a MOM banner.

Use craft supplies you have lying around the house to make a banner for her.  Hang it in the kitchen or living room for everyone to see. She can enjoy the extra attention and then have a keepsake to remember the special day you gave her.

Hopefully some of these ideas will come in handy this weekend.  No matter what you decide to get your mom or do for her to celebrate the day, she will love just having you there to spend the day with her and show her your appreciation.  Most importantly, don't forget to tell her Happy Mother's Day and let her know how much you love her.
