Choosing the Best Siding for Your Lake of the Ozarks Home

In addition to adding beauty and curb appeal to your home, siding helps protect your house from weather damage and improves the insulation of your home.  New siding also appreciates the value of your home significantly if you are planning to put it on the market. Since Summer is the best time to install siding, Above & Beyond Roofing wanted to share some of the different choices of siding at the Lake of the Ozarks with you. RedBeacon.com has a great list of pros and cons for these different types of siding.

Things to Know Before You Get Started

Before installing any siding, you will need to get a permit.  Local zoning rules apply and could affect the type of siding you can use, the surface that siding can be installed over and the necessity of a water-resistant barrier under the siding. Be sure to check your local guidelines before starting a big project like new siding at the Lake of the Ozarks. Along with these rules, understanding the pros and cons of each option will help you make the right decision for your home.  The cost of the materials can vary greatly and is something to consider, as well as the style and finish you want.

Aluminum Siding

You can purchase aluminum siding in panels of different sizes varying from $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot.  It comes in large sheets which are painted and machined pressed,  commonly coming in clapboard style which can be painted your desired color.  These large panels can then be trimmed to the required size when installing.

Advantages:
  • Durable because its immune to fire, rot and termites
  • Suitable for cold climates and places with strong winds because it can fasten securely to the house and do not expand or contract
  • Requires minimum maintenance since dirt and mildew can be cleaned with a sponge and mild cleaner
Disadvantages:
  • Possibility of developing dents under high impact
  • Possibility of moisture penetrating through the seams
  • Poor insulation
  • Fading and Scratches

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is known for its versatility and durability. Unfortunately, it cannot be painted, but its available in a wide range of colors and faux wood finishes.

Advantages:
  • Can have foam backing to help insulate your home and with sound proofing
  • Scratches are not visible on vinyl
  • Maintenance is next to none, just washing with soapy water can do away with dirt
  • Fading color can be restored with a restoration agent
Disadvantages:
  • Tends to burn or melt if exposed to any high heat
  • Can crack and fade after a few years

 Fiber Cement Siding

This siding is compiled of cement, sand, wood fiber and clay in clapboard and shingles style.  This type can also be painted to your desired color.

Advantages:
  • Very durable
  • Can withstand cold climates and harsh winds
  • Little maintenance required - priming and painting every 15 to 20 years
  • Power washers can be used to remove stains and mildew
  • Small cracks and dings can be repaired with some compound
Disadvantages:
  • Very heavy making it difficult to cut
  • Cutting of fiber cement panels can create dust that you should clean up
  • Panels can shatter on impact

Wood Siding

Wood is perhaps the most expensive siding material.  Western red cedar is the most popular choice, but you can also choose from pine, cypress and spruce.

Advantages:
  • Can be trimmed during installation process to ensure no seams are visible
  • Holds paint well
  • Can be bought factory-primed to ensure maximum resistance to moisture
  • Requires minimum maintenance since dirt and mildew can be cleaned with a sponge and mild cleaner
Disadvantages:
  • Needs regular painting, staining or varnishing to keep from cracking, warping or rotting
  • Insect damage such as termites
  • Water damage to home structure under siding

The Energy Efficiency of Metal Roofs

Last month, we talked about the many benefits of choosing metal over other roofing materials.  One of those benefits was energy efficiency. Metal roofing, whether you choose a light or dark color, reflects heat effectively to reduce cooling costs in the summer and to help insulate homes in the winter.  This can definitely help to lower your energy bills.  MetalRoofing.com provides great information on the energy efficiency of choosing metal for your Lake of the Ozarks roofing job.

Reduce Energy Costs

With prices rising all over the board, homeowners are seeking out energy-saving building materials for their new homes or renovations.  They want products that not only secure and improve structures, but that also provide long-term cost-cutting on energy bills while promoting environmental and economic sustainability. Cool Metal Roofing is the answer to this demand; it can save your household up to 40% of its annual energy costs, depending on your geographical region.  This solution offers solid, attractive roofing available in multiple colors and textures.  Read more about Cool Metal Roofing here: http://www.metalroofing.com/v2/content/guide/costs/energy-savings.cfm

Control the Heat

The roof of your home or business has a major impact on solar radiation, the absorption of heat from sunlight. Heat is either reflected into the atmosphere or absorbed into the building through conduction.  Any solar radiation that is absorbed will heat the roof's surface.  The more the solar radiation is absorbed, the greater the need to find alternative ways to dissipate the heat.   Roof design will determine how the heat is reflected and absorbed heat is emitted.  Cool Coating technology focuses on reflecting solar radiation and shedding absorbed heat away from the surface.  Read more about Cool Coatings here: http://www.metalroofing.com/v2/content/metal-roofing/cool-pigment-technology.cfm

Recycling

Metal roofs typically have a minimum of 25% recycled content.  This level of recycled content allows metal roofing to be routinely included on listing for "green" and recycled content products. When ultimately removed as part of a building renovation or demolition, it is 100% recyclable.  Other roofing materials, when removed are disposed of by the ton into landfills.  Metals are exceptional building materials that can credibly claim both recycled content and recyclability by recognized definitions.

9 Affordable, Last-Minute Father's Day Gift Ideas

Father's Day is just 2 days away...and you still don't have a gift for him!  You could get him the usual tie or coffee mug, but why not do something special this year?  There's still time to throw something great together! Your Lake of the Ozarks roofing company gathered some great ideas for affordable, last-minute Father's Day Gifts!

1. Plan a Family Day - Take a day and get the entire family involved. Maybe you could go to the park and have a picnic. Maybe there's a movie playing that Dad has really been wanting to see. Whatever you plan, Dad will appreciate that you are taking time out of your busy schedule to spend a day with him!

2. Make Him Breakfast or Dinner - Get up early and make Dad breakfast so its ready when he wakes up!  Or maybe Dad usually grills on the weekends; give him a break and cook him a meal for once. Maybe he has a favorite meal that he doesn't get very often.  Make him feel special and let him know how much you care.

3. Get Him Something Useful - Is Dad always losing his pen or maybe his glasses?  Get him something useful like a pen keychain or a glasses case.  If he likes to cook, get him a new pair of tongs or an apron that says "Worlds Greatest Dad!" Rather than spending money on something that is just going to sit around and gather dust, get him something he can use!

4. Write Him a Poem - How often do you tell your Dad how much you love him?  Use this holiday as a time to think about all the great things he's done for you.  Put them all together to create a poem, song or letter that you can give to him and he can cherish those words forever. Although anyone would probably enjoy a big, expensive present, its the little things, the thoughtfulness that makes someone feel extra special.  Anyone could buy him something, but not everyone has that special connection or bond that you do with him!

5. Help Out With Chores - Is Dad the one always mowing the grass, taking the trash out or washing the cars?  Give him a break and take a turn with doing some extra chores around the house.  Everyone deserves a break every once in awhile, especially on Father's Day!

6. Customize His Phone - Like many Fathers, maybe your Dad isn't super tech savvy.  Think about everything Dad likes, what his hobbies are and then download useful apps to his phone.  Maybe he works outside and always wants to know the weather forecast.  Maybe he loves Football and would like to stay up to date on all the stats.  No matter what your Dad is into, there's probably an app out there for it!

7. Create a Coupon Book - Give Dad a book of coupons that he can use whenever he wants.  It could include items like cooking dinner, taking the trash out, giving him a foot rub, etc.  You should even throw in there a big bear hug!  Make it as fun or practical as you want, he will enjoy your creativity and thoughtfulness.

8. Homemade Treats - What Dad doesn't love cookies or cupcakes?  Make him something sweet for Father's Day.  Not only will he love it, you aren't spending a fortune on an item he may or may not use.

Now you have plenty of ideas to choose from and you won't have to make up some excuse why you don't have a Father's Day Gift!  And Dad will be surprised with your thoughtfulness when he doesn't pull out that tie or coffee mug that he was expecting.  From everyone here at Above & Beyond Roofing, we hope you have a very Happy Father's Day Weekend!
