What You Need To Know About Roofing Warranties

Purchasing a new roof is a big investment, and you're going to want to make sure its protected with a warranty. Not all roofing warranties are the same, but there are some general things you should keep in mind when choosing a quality product for your roof. Your Lake of the Ozarks roofing company is here to explain a few things you should know about roofing warranties.

Warranty Coverage

Roofing material warranties only cover issues such as wind resistance, algae resistance and those problems caused by manufacturing defects. They don't cover the general wear and tear on your roof from over the years. Keep in mind that the life of your roof is dependent upon several factors including the environment and climate, proper installation, and the quality of your home's insulation and ventilation. Just because the shingle says "30 year" warranty, doesn't mean that it's going to last that long. However, many roofing contractors at the Lake of the Ozarks will offer additional warranties on their services. Talk to your roofer about warranty options before you make any decisions for your project.

Understanding Your Warranty

Make sure that you understand the details of your warranty coverage. Like mentioned above, warranties will vary from product to product and contractor to contractor. Take the time to actually read the manufacturer's warranty and discuss warranties on installation with your roofing contractor. Not all roofing issues will warrant a roof replacement at the Lake of the Ozarks. For example, warranties that have algae coverage could provide compensation in the form of cleaning the affected shingles, rather than replacing them. You should also be aware of the type of language used in the warranty. Sometime the wording is vague, making it hard for you to make a claim. For algae coverage, the warranty may state "significant staining," but who determines what is considered significant? For wind damage, there can be limits on wind speed, and it may be hard to prove that the wind speed was less than the limit.

Above & Beyond Roofing wants to make sure you understand your warranty coverage before you start your project. Talk to us about the manufacturer's warranty on the products we offer, and we'll also go over our installation warranty with you. The warranty is an important part of your roofing project and you need to have a roofer you can trust. Make sure to protect your warranty by maintaining your roof and having a free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks twice a year. More Than Just a Roofing Company

Above & Beyond Roofing has been your premier roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks since 2004. Whether commercial or residential work, there's no job too big or too small for us. Did you know though, that we also offer other home improvement services. Let Above & Beyond take care of all your siding, soffit, fascia and gutter needs as well!

Siding

Aside from making your home look nice, siding serves a very important purpose. It helps to shield and protect your home from the harsh elements. Siding helps keep out any water and debris from entering into the walls and insulation of your home. Poor siding can lead to water finding its way to the frame of your home. Moisture trapped at the frame can lead to wood rot, mold growth and other interior damage. Timely siding replacements and repairs can save you money in the long run.

Soffit

Soffit is the piece of material that connects the roof overhang to the side of the building. It serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose. Without soffit, your rafters would be fully exposed to the elements. Exposed rafters can lead to mold buildup and rotting beams that will need replaced. Soffit also helps your home breathe; with vented soffit, air can flow through the vents to provide proper ventilation of your attic.

Fascia

Fascia is the board that runs along the roof, acting as a finishing edge that connects to the ends of the rafters and trusses. They also typically hold gutters in place. The primary function of fascia is to protect the roof and the interior of the home from moisture. In addition, fascia plays an aesthetic role by creating a smooth, even appearance along the roofs edge.

Gutters

Gutters play an important role in protecting your roof and your home. They funnel water off the roof and away from your home. This protects the roof, siding, windows, doors and foundation from water damage. Making sure your gutters are properly installed and in good working order can save you money in costly repairs down the road. Clogged gutters can lead to leaks and water damage, so it's important to keep them maintained.

Whether we're working on your roofing project or installing new siding or gutters, we guarantee high quality work along with professional and personal service. We pride ourselves on being locally owned and operated, being open 7 days a week and turning the average roofing job in one day. Are Your Asphalt Shingles Losing Their Granules?

If you notice your roof is losing granules, there's a chance your roof is nearing the end of it's life. These mineral granules serve as extra protection from the elements. Without those granules, you could experience leaks and other roof damage. In today's blog, your Lake of the Ozarks roofing company explains both the causes and effects of the loss of protective mineral granules on your asphalt roof.

Spotting Granule Loss

Besides checking the actual shingle surface for granule loss, which can be difficult without climbing on the roof, you can look for granules in the gutters. As the granules fall off the roof, they can collect in the gutters and downspouts. You could also see them collecting on the ground where the downspout sends the water, as the rain can wash the granules down and away from the house.

Causes of Granule Loss

Let's take a look at a few of the common causes of granule loss on asphalt roofs:

1. Your Roof is Old. - In most cases, granule loss will be due to the age of your roof. As your roof ages, the bond between the granules and the asphalt shingle weakens, allowing the granules to fall off. When this happens, it's time to start thinking about investing in a new roof.

2. Your Roof is New. - Granule loss isn't always due to worn out shingles. Often times, brand new shingles can experience minor granule loss due to the foot traffic on your roof during the installation process. If this is the case, you most likely have nothing to worry about. However, if the granule loss continues, there may be a manufacturers defect in the shingles.

3. Your Shingles are Blistering. - Loss of granules can also be due to blistering shingles. Blistering is the term referring to small "pimple-like" protrusions on your shingles. These blisters are typically caused by moisture build-up in the shingles, either from general wear or from a storm. When these "blisters" eventually pop, the granules in that area can be dislodged. If this is the case, you should consider contacting a professional about roof repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks.

4. Your Shingles were Subject to Storm Damage. - Major weather events such as a hail storm can cause your shingles to lose their granules. The impact of the hail can loosen and even remove the granules, and the rain will wash them down your gutters. Depending on how localized the hail damage is, chances are you can just repair that one affected area.

Effects of Granule Loss

Extensive granule loss leads to an exposed roof. Without those protective granules, your shingles are exposed to direct sunlight and rain water. This will cause the wear rate on your roof to accelerate, therefore decreasing the remaining life of your roof. When granule loss is combined with other roof defects such as tears, cracks, or brittleness, its definitely time to consider a roof replacement.

Keep in mind that shingle loss doesn't necessarily mean you need a full roof replacement. However, if you notice granule loss, it's important you schedule a free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks to determine the severity of the damage. For all your roofing needs at the Lake, give Above & Beyond Roofing a call at 573-302-0354.
