5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Roofing Material

When it comes to roofing projects, you have a lot of decisions to make. One of the most important decisions you'll have to make is they type of roofing material to use. From asphalt shingles to metal roofs, you have a wide variety of material options. When choosing a material for your new roof at the Lake of the Ozarks, consider the following:

1. Is this roof for new construction or are you replacing a roof that was already there?

Brand new roofs will offer fewer constraints when it comes to material choice than re-roofs will. If you're replacing an old roof, you'll have to consider pre-existing conditions like roof pitch, the type of existing roofing and the makeup of the underlying roof structure. For re-roofing projects, it's best to consult with a Lake of the Ozarks roofing professional to make sure the material you're considering with "work" and be functionally compatible with your home.

2. How long to do you plan on living in the home?

A new roof is a big investment, so cost is a big consideration. If you aren't planning on staying in the home for that long, a more expensive roofing material may not be the best choice. If you plan on living in the home for quite awhile and want to splurge for that beautiful roof, go for it. However, if you need a new roof now, but plan to move soon after, make sure to consider your return on investment. While curb appeal can increase the value of your home, you want to make sure you can make back whatever you're spending on that new roof.

3. What is the pitch of your roof?

The pitch of your roof will also influence your roofing choice. A steeper-pitched roof is going to present a broader "face" and therefore, you'll want to choose a material that's visually attractive and compliments the rest of the house. In addition, a steeper pitch is more beneficial to a wood roof because it sheds moisture faster and is less likely to collect debris. Metal roofs also naturally shed water more readily and will require a better gutter system.

4. Have you thought about energy efficiency?

Energy efficient roofing offers both financial and environmental benefits. Essentially, the roofing helps reduce cooling needs by helping deflect the sun's energy, keeping your home cooler. It's particularly effective in warmer climates where cooling needs are prevalent throughout the entire year.  Talk to your roofing contractor at the Lake of the Ozarks about your interest in energy efficient materials.

5. What type of environment is your home in?

Do you live in the city or out in the country? If you live in a heavily wooded area, some roofs do better than others in that environment. Although any roofing material can become damaged by falling tree branches, some materials are easier and cheaper to repair. In this case, you're better off going with asphalt shingles as opposed to clay ones.

If you're thinking about undertaking a roofing project, talk to a professional roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks before you make a final decision on the type of material to use. When it comes to your roof, a professional opinion is always a good idea. Above & Beyond Roofing is your go-to roofing professional here at the Lake. No matter your roofing needs, from new construction to re-roofs and repairs, we've got you covered. Give us a call at 573-302-0354 for a free roofing estimate at the Lake of the Ozarks today!

Hail Season Has Arrived In Missouri

As we enter storm season, our roofs should be of top concern. Your roof protects you, your home and it's contents from the elements. While the summer season brings the possibility of tornadoes and flash floods, hail can be far more devastating to property. The #1 roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks wants to make sure you're prepared for hail season and your roof is able to properly protect you throughout the stormy season.

Hail Season

While hail season in Missouri runs from March to October, we see the majority of hail storms between May and August. In Missouri, hail storms primarily occur in the afternoon or evening. The most severe hail storms typically occur between 1 pm and 9 pm. Hail storms rarely last for more than 15 minutes, with the median duration falling at just 6 minutes.

Hail Safety Tips

If you find yourself caught in a hail storm, seek shelter immediately. If you can't get inside a building, at least find something to protect your head. Try to stay away from trees as they can lose branches during severe storms; large isolated trees also attract lightning. Once you've found shelter, stay inside and don't go outside for any reason. Also, be sure to stay away from windows, especially those being struck by hail. In addition, avoid using telephones and electrical appliances to prevent the possibility of electrocution.

Hail and Your Roof

The amount of damage a hailstorm can cause will vary from storm to storm. Factors such as wind, the size and density of the hail, the material of your roof and any barriers, such as trees or other nearby buildings, can all affect the severity of hail damage to your roof. A hailstone can be anywhere from the size of a pea up to the size of a softball. In addition, most hailstones do not have smooth edges, which can also impact the type of damage they cause. Different types of building materials will absorb hail impacts differently. Asphalt shingles, aluminum siding and gutters can likely be dinged or dented, while wood shake shingles and vinyl siding can become cracked. Large hailstones could even be dense enough to actually puncture a roof. The age and condition of your roof will also play a part in the amount of damage it sustains during a hailstorm.

Beware of Scams

With the storm season, you'll see an increase in the need for roof repairs. However, beware of the storm chasers! Often times, after a severe storm hits, roofers from outside of the area will go door to door seeking out work. They will tell homeowners that they can spot damage on their roof and persuade the homeowners to have them fix it immediately. While many people may need roof repairs due to hail damage, those homeowners should seek out help from a reputable Lake of the Ozarks roofer.

While we're just now getting into hail season, we've already experienced a couple of hail storms here at the Lake of the Ozarks. If your roof is not in tip-top shape, it can't do it's job. Now is the time to schedule your free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks. If you're roof has hail damage or any other type of damage, we can get you an estimate for repair or replacement costs. Call Above & Beyond Roofing at 573-302-0354 today!
