Easy Preventive Maintenance for Your Home This Fall

Limited daylight and cooler temps act as a gentle reminder that fall is here and winter is not far behind.  That means time to knock off those honey do's - especially those of an outdoor nature.

 With simple preventative maintenance you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the long run.  Here are some things to check off the list while weather still permits!!
  • Clean your gutters and downspouts.  Make sure the canals and spouts are debris free. If you have a lot of trees surrounding your home, consider gutter guards.
  • Inspect windows and doors to insure the seal is tight and not letting air through.  If air is seeping in either caulk the area to seal it or replace the molding if budget allows.  At minimum consider lining with plastic before the temp drops to low!
  • Hire a Lake of the Ozarks Roofer for a free inspection.  If shingles are curling or cracking, they need to be replaced.  Depending on how many repairs are needed will determine if a patch will do or if a new roof is needed.  
  • Examine flashing around chimneys, skylights and pipes to make sure no gaps exist for water to find a way through.
  • Exterior painting should be done in the Fall with cool - not cold - temps and lower humidity.  If that is on your list - pick your color and go!
  • Unscrew your garden hose to prevent cracking and a flood this spring when you turn it on.  Drain the hose and store inside to be avoid cracking.
  • Schedule an inspection for your chimney if you have a wood burning fireplace.  
  • Check the battery in your smoke alarm.  For the safety of you and your loved ones - never forget this quick test!
These are just a few of the many things you can do to prepare your home for winter.  Saving money is a great reinforcement not to blow them off!
