7 Ways Mother Nature Can Impact Your Roof 🌎

A typical roof should last anywhere from 15-30  years depending on your choice of roofing material. However, sometimes mother nature has other plans and can impact your roof and cause the life of your roof to lessen. Read on to find out how mother nature can impact your roof!

1. Hail

Even the smallest hailstones can damage your roofing shingles. Every strike from hail results in weakened shingles and granule loss. While it may not destroy all your shingles at once, it will gradually cause problems with each storm that hits. Weak or missing granules can lead to roof leaks.

2. Trees

Whether a dying tree falls onto your roof or a storm causes branches to fly into your home, trees are a common culprit in roof damages. You'll want to be sure to trim back and branches that are close to your home and remove any dead tree limbs.

3. Moisture

From water leaks to humidity, excess moisture on your roof can weaken it and cause problems. Mold can spread quickly on both the inside and outside of moist roofs. After an extended period of time, mold can deteriorate the wood structure and cause it to buckle.

4. Moss

Moss is something that grows slowly, but over time, it can endanger your roof. Due to the fact that it soaks up water, it can be a contributing factor in water damage to your home. In some warmer climates, it can even separate the roof shingles. Keeping your roof regularly maintained can prevent moss from growing.

5. Algae

Another organism that can grow on your roof is algae. Like moss, this grows slowly, weakening the roof as it does. Warm, humid summers, like those at the Lake of the Ozarks, can result in algae growth on your roof, especially on light-colored asphalt shingles.

6. Heat

Roofs are designed to withstand high temperatures and the sun's UV rays. However, over time, the sun can take it's toll on your roof. While most roofs are structurally stable, the surface materials will wear in the sun over time. A regular roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks will ensure your shingles are still able to do their job.

7. Ice & Snow

Due to the fact that ice and snow are both wet and heavy, they can cause some major damage to your roof. Ice dams are a major cause of water damage to your roof, and icicles can also damage your gutters, making it difficult to get the water off and away from your roof. The sheer weight of ice and snow can also add stress to your roof. A roof already experiencing problematic areas could experience a roof cave-in under that weight.
