How to Hang Christmas Lights WITHOUT Damaging Your Roof

As Christmas approaches, many of you are getting your decorations up. Christmas lights are a great way to show your holiday spirit, if you hang them correctly. Use these tips to get your Christmas lights hung without damaging your roofing at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1. Test Your Lights Before Hanging Them.

You don't want to hang all your lights just to find out that some of them don't work. Check all your lights for burnt out bulbs or frayed wires before attempting to hang them on your home. Broken lights are a recipe for disaster and can lead to electrical dangers. If you find a strand that doesn't work, the best option is to just throw it out and get a new strand. Be sure to also check the labels on the lights to make sure they are made for outdoor use and can be plugged into one another. You don't want to create a fire hazard by trying to make your home look festive for the holidays.

2. Attach Your Lights to the Eaves.

Shingles are surprisingly fragile and shouldn't be pulled on. They aren't designed to hold the weight of your Christmas lights. Therefore, be sure to attach your lights and any other decorations to the eaves of your roof and not your shingles. If you're roof is flat, with no eaves, you can use Parrot Clips or something similar that go over the wall that juts up over your flat roof. They have small holes in the clips for placing your strands of lights.

3. Don't Use Staples or Nails.

Avoid using staples or nails to attach Christmas lights to your roof. Just because they do it in the movies, doesn't mean you should. You don't want to put any holes in your roof - holes can lead to leaks. Eventually those small holes can lead to other major problems with your roof, causing the need for some Lake of the Ozarks roof repairs. Plastic clips are the best option for hanging your lights as they won't damage your roof. There are a variety of different clips you can use that easily attach to gutters, or the eaves of your roof.

4. Avoid Walking On Your Roof.

Too much added weight is not good for your roof. Every step you take on your roof also wears away the protective surface of your shingles. Plus, if you're roof is old or in bad shape, there is a chance you could fall through. Instead of getting up on your roof to hang lights, you should use a ladder to get them in place. Make sure you use safety precautions when using a ladder though. One of the biggest causes of accidents during the holidays is a wobbly ladder. Find someone to help you get the job done. They can hold the ladder for you, hand you things, untangle lights and anything else you might need help with while putting up those decorations.
