Extend the Life of your New Roof with These Tips!

Did you recently get a new roof at the Lake of the Ozarks? Your roof is an investment and when taken care of it should last many years! If you want your roof to remain in great shape, starting roof maintenance early is the best way to protect your new roof. Read on to get a few tips for preserving the life of your new roof from our roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks!

#1 Trim Overhanging Branches

Tree timing can help keep leaves, moss, and tree debris off of your roof. In anticipation of those Missouri storms, it’s a good idea to tackle this as soon as possible to avoid abrasions from limbs and leaves that touch your roof and could damage the shingles, especially in high winds or ice storms. Don’t risk damaging your trees or yourself here, contact a professional to get those branches trimmed back away from your roof!

#2 Remove Leaves

Depending on the slope and design of your roof, or if trees tower over your housetop, loads of leaves can collect in the valleys of the roof or around the chimney. It is important to remove them because moisture can get trapped under the decomposing leaves, allowing moisture to collect in your roof. Excess moisture on your roof can lead to a variety of issues and the need for costly roof repairs. Simply grab a roof leaf rake or leaf blower to get the cleaning job done. If the leaves are too wet or deep, causing the need to climb on the roof to remove them, you may want to call in a professional for help.

#3 Clean the Gutters

When you notice it’s time to clean the clogged gutters, it’s typically because water is overflowing and discoloring the paint or siding, or you’ve noticed water where it shouldn’t be...like inside your home! Unfortunately, this isn’t the only repercussion clogged gutters could cause. When leaves pile too deeply in the gutters, water can flow upwards into the roof sheathing and cause it to rot, or worse, cause rot in the roof rafters. Repairing that kind of damage is costly and could run into the thousands of dollars range, but you can avoid it by cleaning your gutters each fall and spring. If you’re comfortable working on a ladder, you can do it yourself; if not, hire a pro!

#4 Prevent Ice Damage

Ice buildup on the roof is often a Lake of the Ozarks roofing problem. After a winter storm, you'll want to remove some or all of the snow that might melt and leak into your house. It’s best to dislodge the ice with a roof rake; don’t pry it off, as this could damage the roof. Don't climb on your roof in the winter, as chances of falling are much higher due to the slick, icy conditions. Before the cold weather sets in, check to ensure you have adequate insulation. Insulation plays a big role in controlling roof temperatures and preventing ice dams from forming.
