Soffit and It's Importance to Your House

When getting a new roof at the Lake of the Ozarks, there's more to it than just a few shingles. Other important aspects of your roof include soffit, fascia and gutters. What exactly is soffit you may ask? Above & Beyond Roofing is here to explain it to you!

What is Soffit?

A soffit is technically the underside of any element of an architectural structure, such as an arch, a balcony or overhanging eaves. The word originates with the Latin suffigere, meaning "to fix underneath." While soffits can be found on ceilings, stairs and even cornices, the most common type is found in the area under the eaves on the exterior of a house. The soffit extends from the side of the house to the edge of the eave and closes the space beneath the eave. It serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose for your Lake of the Ozarks roof.

Aesthetics

Soffit could be considered the "skin" that covers your eaves. Without it, your rafter beams would be fully exposed and that's not a pretty sight. By using soffit, you can cover it in the style and color that you want. It's an easy way to add some personality to your home.

Functionality

Soffit protects your rafters from the weather elements. If your rafters are exposed, you'll likely have to replace them due to mold or rot. Soffit also helps your building to breath. Vented soffit allows air to flow through the vents to provide regular attic circulation. Air flow is important for your entire home. Soffit is the easiest way to protect your roof frame and achieve proper air circulation.

Weather Vulnerability

The soffit is more vulnerable to weather damage than any other part of the house. The underside of your roof can repeatedly be soaked by water from torn shingles, damaged or rusting flashing, ice dams or poorly functioning gutters. This excess water creates wet material that is highly susceptible to rot. Squirrels, birds and other small critters can also damage the soffit by using it as a nesting place when not able to find a point of entry into the home.
