5 Things to Consider When Choosing Shingle Color

You may think choosing a color for your new roof at the Lake of the Ozarks isn't that big of a deal, but remember you'll have to live with that choice for many years to come.  Not only do you want to choose a color that works well with the color of the exterior of your house, but you also want to consider the climate.  Here are 5 things from AngiesList.com to consider when choosing the color of your Lake of the Ozarks roof.

1. Light or Dark 


Besides the way the shingle looks, the shade of it can have a lot to do with heat retention.  Depending on the climate you live in, you'll want to choose a shade that works for the weather.  If you live in a really hot climate, you don't want to do with a black shingle.

2. Paint or Brick 


You can always change the color of paint on your Lake of the Ozarks siding and shutters, however brick color is permanent.  Keep this in mind when choosing shingle colors.  If you have brick, be sure to hold a sample up next to it and see how it looks.

3. Keep It Simple, but Not Boring


Don't try to match your roof color exactly with the color of your home.  You will end up with a monotone and lifeless color scheme. On the other hand, you don't want to create something too busy. Too many patterns and colors can overwhelm the eyes.  If you home is monotone and not very busy, then a vivid shingle can add to the curb appeal.

4. Shade or Sun 


Shingles look different in the shade than they do in the sun. When you are looking at samples keep this in mind and look at them in both situations.  Make sure the color is complimentary to your house in the sun as well as the shade.

5. Reselling 


If you are considering putting your house on the market, you should probably go with a neutral color. You may love bright, bold colors, but not everyone has those same tastes.  The outside of the home is the first thing a buyer sees and if they don't like it, they may not even take a step inside.
