Tile Roof offers more than Just a SouthWestern Flair

Many people will choose a Tile Roof for their home to add a "southwestern flair" to the appearance of their home.  Like all materials that you choose for your roof, tile has it's advantages and disadvantages.   Tile roofing is often used in Arizona and other sunny regions because it lasts a long time and won't burn under the sun.

Here are a few things to think about if you are considering a Tile Roof.

Advantages:
  • Longevity This type of roofing material will last a long time - Some manufacturers estimate their product will last as long as 50 years!!
  • Classic Style - Clay and concrete tiles offer a very distinctive Southwestern look to your home.
  • Options - Some manufacturers are improving their producst by creating tile that looks like wood shakes and are lighter-weight.
  • Fire Resistant
  • Rot and Insect Resistant
Disadvantages:
  • Weight - Tile is usually very heavy and this will often require some type of reinforcement to support the weight. If you are replacing your roof and using Tile instead of a lighter productt like 3-shingle roofs, then additional structural work may be required to ensure your roof is stable and can uphold the weight.
  • Fragile - Tile is fragile and can break if you walk on them.  Repairs and maintenance should be left to professionals to avoid breaking the tiles.
  • Maintenance - Tile has great longevity - but the underlayment will need to be inspected and replaced every eight to 20 years. Damaged underlayment can cause your roof to leak and your tiles could break.
  • Price - Tile roofing is one of the more expensive options for your roof and many times a tile replacement roof will require additional cost due to the added weight of the material.
