Don't Damage Your Roof Hanging Up Your Christmas Lights

It's almost time to bring the Christmas lights out of storage and hang them up. Whether you decide to decorate a little bit early or wait until after Thanksgiving, you'll want to make sure you don't damage your roof in the process. Today, your favorite roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks has some helpful tips for hanging up your outdoor Christmas lights without damaging your roof. Follow these precautions when hanging up your lights this year.

Protecting Your Roof

When securing your outdoor holiday lights, never use tacks or nails. These can damage your roofing material, and compromise the integrity of your roof. Forget staples, clothespins or any other contraption you’ve used in the past for mounting lights to your house. Instead, you should use light clips to secure holiday decorations. Be sure not to put too much weight on your gutters when hanging Christmas decorations from your roof. It's very important that your gutters work properly throughout the winter season. When the snow melts off your roof, it needs an effective way to run off the roof. If your gutters aren't working properly, ice dams can form, causing bigger problems for your roof.

Safety When Decorating

For your own safety, make sure to use a good ladder when installing lights. Before hanging any lights, make sure that you have the proper type of lights that are made for outdoor use. When plugging in the lights, be sure to use a GFCI outlet for your power source. In the event of overcurrent, this type of outlet will shut the circuit down. Make sure to turn the lights off any time you leave home and when you go to bed. While they may look pretty when passing by, they can also be a fire hazard that you don't want to leave unattended. Make sure that any extension cords used are rated for outdoor use and that the connections are above ground, snow, and water.
