A great reference check for contracting companies is to research the company on the Better Business Bureau. BBB's Vision is, "An ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other." They have a rating system that ranges from A+ to F. It's important to go directly to their website to do your research because it is not uncommon for unethical contractors to boast A+ BBB Ratings when in fact they don't. #3 Confirm the Contractor has Workers' Comp and Insurance 

You may not realize it, but if a contractor does not carry workers' compensation, and an accident happens on your property while they are working, you could be liable for the injuries rather than the contractor. That's why you should never skip confirmation on Workers' Comp!

For similar reasons, you should also ensure that the contractor you hire has at least liability insurance in case damage occurs on your property and the fault lies on the contractor.
