Can Fluctuating Temperatures Affect Your Roof?

The weather here in mid-Missouri is quite unpredictable. While we've been having snow and below freezing temperatures this week, the forecast shows temperatures are expect to rise back up into the 50s next weekend. While you may enjoy the warmer temperatures, you're roof doesn't deal with the temperature fluctuations quite as well. Our Lake of the Ozarks roofing company wants to educate you on how fluctuating temperatures affect your roof.

Fluctuating Temperatures & Your Roof

Think of your roof like a rubber band. While extremely hot weather causes your roof to expand, the colder weather causes it to contract. This "thermal shock" causes your roof to stretch quite a bit to accommodate the changes in temperature. Most roofs are designed to handle this expansion and contraction, but older roofs don't take the movement as well.

Damage Caused By Fluctuating Temperatures

One of the most common forms of damage caused by fluctuating temperatures is a warped roof. Not only is a warped roof not very appealing to the eye, but it can also be a serious problem, as it can allow moisture to seep into your roof. Moisture in your home is never a good idea, and even more problems can arise if that moisture re-freezes under your shingles.

It is important that you have a Lake of the Ozarks roof inspection at least twice a year - preferably during the fall and spring months, immediately prior to and following the winter season. Making sure your roof is in good condition will minimize the damage that can occur with fluctuating temperatures.
