Memorial Day Fireworks at the Lake of the Ozarks
For many Americans, holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day and especially the 4th of July, just wouldn't be the same without fireworks. Why is that? How did the concept for fireworks begin and why do we have them on these holidays? Your Lake of the Ozarks roofer has the answers here:
Many historians believe that fireworks originated in China, which continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. It is thought that as early as 200 B.C., the Chinese had already stumbled upon the first type of firecracker, roasted bamboo. Due to its hollow air pockets, bamboo explodes with a bang when heated. Sometime between 600-900 A.D., Chinese alchemists created an early form of gunpowder. They began stuffing the substance into bamboo shoots that were then thrown into the fire and voila...the first fireworks were born!
By the 10th century, the Chinese had developed crude bombs and began attaching firecrackers to arrows that were shot at their opponents during military engagements. Two hundred years later, they learned how to fire these explosives into the air, creating the first rockets. Outside of battle, this technology was used to put on the first aerial fireworks displays. In the 13th century, the gunpowder made its way to Europe & Arabia, where powerful weapons such as cannons and muskets were created. Meanwhile, fireworks became increasingly popular, first to commemorate military victories and later to enhance public celebrations and religious ceremonies.
