Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing a Roof Color

When it comes time to replace your roof, one of the decisions you will have to make is your roofing color. A new roof can last anywhere from 12-30+ years depending on what type of material you choose for your new roof construction. When you put on a long-lasting roof, it's important to choose a color you will love for years to come. An easy way to choose your new roofing color is by asking yourself these questions below!

1. What is the climate like where I live?

This may seem like an off-topic question, but it can be a major factor when it comes to choosing a roofing color. Temperatures during the summer months at the Lake of the Ozarks can soar, and you’ll want to keep this in mind. Certain colors can retain heat very well and end up heating up your attic and raising your HVAC bill. It’s been proven that the wood of your home underneath black shingles can get up to 10 degrees hotter than the wood under white shingles. That’s hot!
Also consider whether your home is positioned in the shade, in the sun, or both. The color of your roof will look different in different lighting, and it’s important that you are able to see samples in different areas before you commit to a color.

2. What color is my siding?

Your roof and your siding should complement each other, but not match. Have you ever seen a gray house with gray shingles? It tends to look monotone and lifeless. In most cases, it’s a good idea to choose complementary colors for your roofing and siding combination. A light and a dark are typically a good bet. If your home is brick or stone, be sure to compare several different samples in different places against the brick. We recommend choosing a solid color for your shingles if you have a brick home to avoid looking too busy.

3. Do I LOVE this color?

Make sure you are fully committed to the color before you settle. It’s much easier to repaint your siding, doors, and windows than to change the color of your roof. If you choose a color for your roof based solely on these other features, then decide to repaint, you will have significantly fewer stylistic options. If your home is brick or stone, you’ll have less wiggle room, so it’s important that you’re fully satisfied with the look of the color against your home before committing.

4. Do I plan on selling my home?

If you’re considering potentially moving and selling your home, you’ll want to think about what the market wants. It’s best to stick with neutral colors if this is the case. Neutral colors tend to do better with homebuyers than bright, unconventional colors. A specific color of green or red might only attract a certain smaller group of buyers while the majority might not have those same tastes. Remember your curb appeal! The outside of the home is the first thing your potential buyer will consider.
