How Tornado Season Can Affect Your Roof

Tornado season in the Midwest runs from mid-March to June. Missouri is located in "tornado alley" and is considered a high risk area for tornado activity. Keep reading to learn more about tornadoes and what kind of damage they can do to your roof from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofing company!

What is a Tornado?

A tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Wind speeds can reach up to 300 mph, causing damage to large buildings, uprooting trees and hurling vehicles hundreds of yards. Even if a tornado doesn't directly hit your property, you could still experience damage from the accompanying wind and hail. Tornado paths range from 100 yards to 2.6 miles wide and are rarely more than 15 miles long. They can last anywhere from several seconds to more than an hour; however, they rarely last more than 10 minutes. Most tornadoes travel from the southwest to the northeast with an average speed of 30 mph, but speeds of up to 70 mph have also been observed.

Possible Damage from a Tornado

Depending on the severity of the storm and the wind speed, roof damage can range from minor issues to devastating circumstances. Here's a list of possible roof damage you could expect from a tornado, from light damage to severe damage:
  • Blown off shingles
  • Hail damage to roof and/or gutters
  • Peeled off roof surface
  • Damage to gutters and/or siding
  • Broken tree branches (thrown into roof)
  • Shallow-rooted trees pushed over (onto roof)
  • Severely stripped roof
  • Roofs torn completely off
  • Large trees snapped or uprooted (falling on roof)
  • Light-object missiles generated (thrown into roof)
  • Entire homes destroyed
Even if you can't physically see storm damage to your roof, you should have it checked out after a severe weather event. Hail damage can be difficult to spot from the ground, but can greatly affect the integrity of your roof. Storm damage left unaddressed can lead to more costly roof repairs or even roof replacement in the future.
